![]() “An awareness or analysis of one's own learning or thinking processes."Īlthough a clear definition of reflection was not provided, instructions in the study provided a working definition. The process of thematically reviewing the articles led to a conceptual map of approaches to reflection and reflective practices within the profession of physical therapy and provided context and target populations.įive themes emerged through the analysis of reflection and reflective practices in physical therapy: (1) identification of terminology used, (2) the methods used to facilitate reflection or reflective practice, (3) the theories and models that informed conceptions of reflection and reflective practices, (4) the purpose for engaging in reflection or reflective practice, and (5) identification of the targeted population. It was necessary to return to the identified articles, re-read, and further extract data to ensure a comprehensive recording of content and themes. 14 Terms and emergent themes were observed for patterns, and meaningful data were clustered to enhance data comparison and interpretation. Thematic content analysis of the articles was the first step in ordering and understanding these data. Next, a more in-depth analysis of the literature was conducted to gain insight into the content represented in the review. ![]() This process informed a broad, descriptive overview of the types of literature that address reflection and reflective practices in physical therapy. Frequency within these categories was identified to gain an understanding of the dominant areas of research in terms of intervention, research method, and geographical location. The purpose of this paper was to identify and describe the nature of current literature on reflection and reflective practices in physical therapy and potential gaps in the research literature.Īfter charting the data, the data were first collated according to the years of publication, countries of origin, sources or types of publication, and methodological approaches used. It can be useful to understand how reflective practice has been applied within the profession and to a course and identify gaps that might be addressed to move the field forward. Scoping review methodology is appropriate to define the state of the literature in a given field and how a complex topic, like reflection, has been operationalized in the literature. 11 However, little is known about how reflection and reflective practice are being adopted in the discipline of physical therapy. In physical therapy, reflection has been used improve patient care, better support clinical supervision, 9 improve collaboration, 10 and advance clinical reasoning. ![]() 3 Specifically, reflection and reflective practices have been used in nursing, 4, 5 occupational therapy, 6, 7 and speech language pathology, 8 among other fields. Reflection has emerged as a reoccurring theme in many allied health professions in the last several decades. 2 It is through reflection that we can begin to acknowledge the practical knowledge gained through professional practice. 2 Schön and other theorists suggest that although technical rationality is the leading epistemology of practice, technical rationality does not necessarily help a practitioner navigate the murky grounds of complex clinical cases. 2 He discusses how many practitioners experience clinical practice situations that are complex, uncertain, unique, and generally do not fall within the skills and techniques learned through traditional expertise. ![]() Schön identifies a crisis in confidence in the professions and attributes it to a growing skepticism about professional effectiveness and professional knowledge. Although there have been other theorists on reflection, Schön will be used as the foundation for the discussion of reflection in professional practice. 1 Schön is a seminal theorist on reflection and coined the term reflective practice. Donald Schön has conceptualized a reflective practitioner as someone who uses reflection as a means of learning from experiences to advance one's expertise, but also as a means to navigate through the murky, indeterminate grounds of complex problems that arise in professional practice.

In the early 1500s, the job of organizing the Spanish Treasure Fleets coming over from the newly discovered New World mines fell to Charles I of Spain (Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire). The Pillar in the north is the Rock of Gibraltar, and in the south either Monte Hacho or Jebel Musa in North Africa. The Latin phrase “NEC PLVS VLTRA” (No More Beyond) was used to describe what lay beyond the Pillars in the Atlantic Ocean. ![]() In ancient times, legend says that Hercules created the Pillars of Hercules (that flank the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar) to prevent sea monsters from entering the Mediterranean from the Atlantic. they were used in trade, and that is how Spanish new-world reales, minted in South America, wound up quite literally. they were melted and made into silver plate, like religious items, tableware or jewelry 4. they were melted down and reminted in Spanish mints 3. sometimes the king “commandeered” them to pay for wars and other debts Spain incured 2. Once they reached Spain, several things could happened to the coins: 1. More galleons joined them from Mexico and other Caribbean ports, and together they headed north to Spain. There the treasure would be carried across the isthmus, then loaded on other galleons that were headed to Havana, Cuba. The South Seas Fleet then began the 1,300-mile voyage to Panama. For the next 250 years they were loaded on mules and llamas to begin the arduous two week, 120 mile trek down the mountain to Arica (now in modern day Chile), where they were loaded on a small fleet of Spanish galleons (three or four) and other vessels that would sail north to Callao, the port at Lima.Īt Callao, they would pick up more gold and silver from the Lima mine and mint. In 1573, the first silver coins were minted in Potosí, Upper Peru (present-day Bolivia). In 1546, at over 15,000 feet above sea level, a mountain of silver was discovered – they called it Cerro de Potosí - some called it Cerro Rico (“rich hill”). Inspired by Cortés’ success in “conquering” Mexico, Francisco Pizarro González made several attempts to conquer Peru (including what is present-day Bolivia), and finally succeeded in 1533. They are some of the most detailed and beautiful coins produced in the Spanish colonies, as the design actually tells the story of the Spanish conquest of the “New World.”īut to understand how exactly to read them, it is helpful to take a brief trip back in time. Many of the silver spanish Reales - or "Pieces of 8" recovered from famous shipwrecks, or found in buried treasure caches, are minted with the Pillars and Waves design. This is why archeological artifacts should be left in place and reported to the land management agency: where they are is just as important as what they are.How to Read the Legendary Coins of the Spanish Main. Second, the coins’ exact location and what they were found with has contributed to educated guesses about their history. First, the visitor who found the coins and turned them into the park showed great respect for the history and resources in the park and instead of keeping them, ensured everyone could learn about the coins. The lack of nearby places having potential to contain ancient deposits suggests the coins are not associated with 17th or 18th century Native Americans or Spanish explorers. Third, the coins were found in a canyon bottom, a setting unlikely to preserve ancient deposits. Second, the coins were found in a scatter of modern houseboat trash that included 15 United States coins dating from 1974 to 2016. First, the dates of the two coins are widely divergent (84) and are significantly earlier than the Dominguez and Escalante Expedition of 1776, the first known Spanish presence in the area. The park visited the site where the coins were found and believes their presence near Halls Crossing is modern, based on three observations. Fernando Vela Cossio and Luis Fernando Abril Urmente assisted with the identification. The coins are being stored in a climate controlled environment to protect them and are not on public display. A hiker in the Halls Crossing area discovered two small coins and turned them into the park for further study. However they were probably part of a modern coin collection, perhaps accidentally or intentionally dropped by a visitor to Lake Powell. ![]() Glen Canyon National Recreation Area’s investigation of centuries old Spanish coins turned into the park has provisionally concluded the coins are authentic. We did only see them start dating in last week’s episode, but it’s still not enough to craft a great relationship between two characters. They have already rushed into things by sleeping together without trying to get to know one another first. Liv’s chemistry with Justin ( Tongayi Chirisa) still needs some work. The relationships are still becoming a big problem this season. He had some of the best dialogue in the episode and made some great references to ghosts being portrayed in pop culture. As a ghost, Greg’s return was a great treat to have. Despite being a hallucination, Liv was able to make peace with Drake’s death before she can move on. There wasn’t any mention of him since the season premiere, but Liv was able to confront it with the personality that she inhabited. We didn’t get to see how much of an impact Drake’s death had on Liv, so this episode definitely went into that with the help of a dead man’s brain. What was great about the episode was that they were finally able to address the guilt that Liv felt after killing her ex-boyfriend Drake ( Greg Finley) last season. It’s as if there’s no way of putting Blaine down for good on this show. Boss is just as skeptical as Blaine’s father was when they discover that Blaine is still alive and kicking. Even though he tries to scare Stacey with his zombie face, he tries to make things light in this situation. Blaine’s whole exchange with Stacey Boss was entertaining. It was pretty funny to see both of these enemies team up and go into full zombie mode together with some motivation on both their parts. However, Ravi seems to trust him enough to help him out and even get Liv to help out. ![]() Surprisingly, Blaine would be the last person you would call for help. With Liv ( Rose McIver) and Blaine on the way, there may be some hope for Ravi to get out of this mess. He did bring some humor to this dangerous situation as he is still under the influence of a war veteran’s brains. was also in a tight spot with him being tied up to be killed live on the Internet. We see him more as a man of science when he’s at the morgue, but seeing him infiltrating a zombie-hate group is just as shocking. Its really uncomfortable seeing Ravi in a place out of his element. Based on what we saw, it seems like he is willing to sacrifice his life for his friends. Let’s first address the fact that Ravi ( Rahul Kohli) is in dangerous territory after going undercover as a member of the zombie truthers. These are big moments that feel like a finale even though there’s still a few episodes left in the season. Even the zombie truthers are planning to expose the existence of zombies after capturing Don E ( Bryce Hodgson). ![]() It’s pretty much clear that we are about to get a big reveal as Stacey Boss ( Eddie Jemison) finds out about zombies and partners up with former business associate Blaine ( David Anders) in the brains trade. The CW ’s iZombie: Season 3, Episode 10: ‘Return of the Dead Guy’ has proven that much of the conflict this season has been between humans and zombies as we inch closer to zombies being discovered by the public.
